LTL Freight Shipping: How Does It Work And What Are Its Benefits?

3/13/2017

Picture
What stands as Less-Than-Truckload (LTL), is a type of freight shipping that changed the world since the day it was invented. LTL shipping is freight that is too large for parcel shipping - yet too small for full truckload (FTL) shipping. Standing just in the middle, the average LTL shipments range from 100lbs to 10,000lbs and are priced differently based on their weight.

LTL Shipping: From A Trend To A Reality
LTL freight shipping has grown from a trend to reality nowadays, with more and more carriers specializing in moving LTL. That made the process of shipping LTL both more refined and efficient in the past few years - and substantially grew demand for this kind of shipping services.

When it comes to the rates of this type of shipping, they are calculated using weight, freight class and distance from one zip code to another zip code. In a market that is worth $30 billion in the US alone, LTL freight shipping is on the rise.

And if you are wondering how the entire thing works, you can read about it below.

The Process Behind LTL Shipping
The process of LTL freight shipping starts with the LTL carrier that sends out numerous vehicles (including trucks, flatbed, trailers, etc.) to the customers for their daily collections. After that, the shipments are brought to the origin terminal and unloaded - while individual shipments that are sent to the same geographic area are loaded onto a vehicle for delivery to the destination terminal.

As soon as that is completed, the shipments are moved to the regional terminal which services the destination area and then is sorted and loaded onto local vehicles for final delivery. That is how LTL freight shipping functions in a nutshell.

But what are the benefits of this type of shipping?

All The Benefits OF LTL Freight Shipping
As you already know, less than truckload (LTL) shipping is the ideal solution for every shipper that has too much freight for parcel carrier services - but not enough to warrant a full truckload. The first benefit comes with the minimized cost, which is typically at or near the top of the list of things that every shipper considers.

On top of that, LL shipping is an environmentally-friendly process that reduces emissions and presents a better way to ship when considering our (green) planet. LTL shipping as a process allows one truck to carry a full load rather than multiple trucks carrying loads below their capacity - which brings out this benefit.

Another core benefit worth mentioning is the increased security. This comes from the fact that LTL carriers adhere to the hub and spoke operations and handle freight several times during transit. This lets them protect the freight from general wear and tear and other loads aboard - but also reduce the likelihood that it is lost during the shipping.

The list of benefits when it comes to LTL freight shipping goes on and on. As a solution, LTL is easy to track, and there are many upgrades to it such as expedited shipping solutions and planned deliveries. A number or a pickup date track the shipments - and there are a lot of additional service options including lift gates, non-commercial shipping, notification options and inside pickup and delivery.

A Final Word
Since on-time delivery to the customers is an essential part of everyone's business, LTL freight shipping comes as a great way to ensure that will happen in every case. The freedom of choosing an LTL shipping provider in an industry that is growing gives business owners a lot of opportunities to upsell their services but also ensure shipping quality and be able to plan their operations on time.

That is why the world of LTL freight shipping is set to grow even more in the future. Having a reliable LTL freight carrier means working professionally and knowing your business from the inside. Also, it is a decision that ensures peace of mind and prevents various costs, vehicle maintenance issues, and in-house workers.

I like how you mentioned that some freight shipping services are easy to track. My husband and I are people that very much like when our packages arrive when we want them to. Being able to track something would be so nice! It would let us know when it is coming and if it is on time.
